Sports Premium Funding 18/19

At Olga Primary School, we believe that sports and extra-curricular clubs play an important role in promoting social inclusion, healthy lifestyle and self-confidence, as well as helping children to discover and develop their talents and enthusiasms.

What is the Sports Premium?

From September 2014, the government has provided additional funding of £150 million per annum for academic year to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. In 2017/18, we received £14000. This funding - provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and sport - is allocated to primary schools and is ring-fenced so that it can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools.

Purpose of the funding

All schools have to spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but there is freedom to choose how we do it.

Our aim is to maintain and improve the quality and quantity of sports and afterschool clubs, inter and intra school competitions, and to increase the opportunities for pupils to try different activities whilst raising participation numbers.

At Olga Primary School we recognise the contribution of PE to the health and well-being of the children. We believe that an exciting and varied PE curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities have a positive influence on the concentration, attitude and academic achievement of all children. Furthermore, through sports and physical activity, we aim to reduce the incidence of obesity, smoking and other such activities which can have a detrimental impact upon pupil health and well-being.

Use of the funding at Olga Primary School

The money is use for the benefit of all children, regardless of their sporting ability. We will continue to place a high priority on our PE provision and to invest in staffing and resources to enhance the PE curriculum as well as extra-curricular sports and after schools clubs. In order to achieve our aims, the sports premium is used in the following ways:-

  • To pay for a qualified coach who supports teachers in curriculum support and specialised sports coaches during PE lessons.
  • To ensure that the equipment the children are using to a good standard for its purpose and allowing children to access the best quality P.E environment.
  • To help for specialist coaches to run after school clubs, such as Healthy Lifestyles and other specific sports.
  • Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for staff who feel they would require additional support out with time with the qualified coach
  • To provide a subsidy for those in need to access after school clubs.
  • To provide competitions and transport to and from different venues when required

Swimming

In the year 6 (2017/ 18) 100% of pupils can swim 10m.

What percentage of your current year 6 cohort can swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 meters?

Out of 29 children 59% can swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 meters

Children will be reminded that they are entitled to free swimming within the borough to help to improve their swimming skills.
